Having grown pumpkin, at Lyburn, for some 30 years now, the season runs from August to Christmas. Lyburn Farm is situated on the northern edge of the New Forest, on the Hampshire Wiltshire borders, between the villages of Nomansland, Hamptworth, and Landford and extends to approximately 450 acres. We grow a range of Pumpkin and Squash, some organic and some non-organic. The squash varieties we grow are Crown Prince, Kabocha (Hokkaido), Onion, Acorn, and Gem squash. Occasionally some more exotic varieties.
“BEST PUMPKIN SUPPLIER IN THE FOREST!”
Straddling the small river Blackwater, Lyburn Farm has been farmed by the Smales family, Mike, Judy and their son Jonathon, for the last 40 years. The river Blackwater rises on some of the high ground of the forest and as the heather and gorse gives way, to the old ancient oak forest, home of the fallow deer, the countryside falls away sharply towards the north. In the bottom of the valley you will find the Hamptworth estate, of which Lyburn farm is part.
The name Lyburn, is in fact quite unique, it is derived from the Scottish, lye ‘born’, and burn ‘river’, ‘borne by the river’, and with the Blackwater on either side we certainly are.
Lyburn Farmhouse Cheesemakers
Lyburn farm makes a variety of different hand made cheeses, all of which are made from our own cows milk. Although they are pressed, these artisan cheeses are not that close to cheddar cheese. They are, in general, a softer and a more continental type of cheese, with the exception of Old Winchester and Old Smales. The Lyburn Gold, is where we start and details of this cheese and all the others can be found on the next page headed ‘Cheeses’.
